Founder and President

Cosette Wu

Founder and President

Hi! My name is Cosette. I founded Scleroderma United back in 2019 after my grandpa passed away from systemic sclerosis. I’m originally from Honolulu, Hawaii but am currently in Cambridge, Massachusetts pursuing my undergraduate degree at Harvard University. Scleroderma United’s mission of connecting and empowering scleroderma warriors around the world arose from my experience witnessing the disease’s impact on my grandpa, and I’m so grateful to have met countless wonderful and inspiring people through our organization’s work! Outside of leading Scleroderma United, I serve as Co-President of the Harvard Undergraduate Foreign Policy Initiative, Vice President of the Harvard Venture Capital Group, and Co-Captain of the Harvard Club Tennis Team. I’m working in London this summer at the National Academy for Social Prescribing, and I’m excited to bring what I learn back to Scleroderma United and improve our initiatives!

Hi, I’m Aditya! I’m from India, but have spent most of my life living in Singapore and China, and am currently an undergraduate student currently studying Medical Biosciences at Imperial College London. Having a keen interest in biomedicine, I was initially interested in scleroderma from a scientific viewpoint. Through my research, it became evident to me that there is a severe lack of awareness about scleroderma among the general public, which is what led me to discover Scleroderma United. Apart from my interest in the biosciences, I am a hardcore Taylor Swift fan and I’m obsessed with romanticising my life as an international student in London! I hope to bring a unique perspective to the Scleroderma United team and work to empower those affected by this disease.

I’m a medical student from Iran. I’ve always been passionate about helping others in general, and I’d like to be of use to those who have unique challenges. I knew from my lectures and textbooks about the nature of scleroderma, and I noticed the daily challenges of people with this condition are rarely a topic for discussion. I was quite inspired by Scleroderma United’s work, and their efforts at sharing people’s stories. Therefore, I decided to be a part of this team. Despite having a tough schedule, I make sure to listen to music, podcasts and to draw when I can.

Hi everyone! My name is Casen Whitehead, and I am a student at UNC-Chapel Hill in North Carolina. I am from Holly Springs, North Carolina, and I am studying Environmental Health Sciences and Psychology on the Pre-Med track. My future career goal is to pursue medical school in the hopes of becoming an anesthesiologist. My hobbies include running, hanging out with friends, reading, watching reality TV, and seeking anything that boosts my adrenaline. I have always been an “adventure seeker,” so I love traveling, being adventurous, experiencing new cultures, and trying new things. I joined Scleroderma United’s team because I have a true passion for helping people who are facing tough medical obstacles. As someone who was diagnosed with Leukemia in high school, I know what it means to face a life-changing event and to feel lost; as a result, I want to use my own experiences—as well as the stories I learn from others—to not only encourage patients with Scleroderma to keep fighting but to also educate and spread advocacy about this rare autoimmune disease.

I am excited to be apart of Scleroderma United to continue my work on rare diseases and contribute to the expansion of educational resources and research participation, and reduction of misinformation on scleroderma!

My name is Caden Lombard, and I am a freshman at Duke University studying biology. I was born in Florida but lived in Guam and Hawai’i for most of my life. I like to spend a lot of time outside whether it be going for a hike or just laying in a field. If I’m not in nature, there’s a good chance I am working in a molecular biology fish lab or watching a movie with friends. I am extremely interested in joining the team at Scleroderma United because I enjoy being a part of a supportive community. I am passionate about helping people and combatting the false idea that chronic diseases have to be debilitating and depressing. I want to listen to and share the stories of people who suffer from scleroderma to remind them that they are not alone. I want to help patients understand their condition and how to live with it to improve quality of life. Raising awareness about rare diseases is essential to improving patient outcomes and mental health. I am so excited to be a part of a team that is committed to supporting patients and creating a community of mutual learning and understanding!

My name is Sandhya and I’m from Farmington, Connecticut. I’m currently a second year medical student at the University of Connecticut. Being a student, I’ve had the privilege to spend more time with patients and hear their story compared to my preceptors, who are focused on the administrative tasks, and this has showed me the power of storytelling and its impacts. By joining the team, my goal is to help empower people with rare autoimmune diseases like Scleroderma and hear their needs: whether it be physical, social, emotional, etc. Outside of Scleroderma United, I spend time immersing myself in the gym or in a new fictional world with books! A fun fact about me, I used to play badminton competitively!

I am currently a sophomore at Boston University majoring in biology with a specialization in cell biology, molecular biology, and genetics. I wanted to join Scleroderma United because I was moved by their mission of helping to raise awareness about this chronic disease, as well as giving patients a community to look to for advice. Providing emotional support is just as important as any medical care, and I knew I wanted to be involved with this organization. Outside of Scleroderma United, I work as an on campus EMT, and am on our Bollywood fusion dance team!

Hi! My name is Snigdha, a third-year studying Molecular Environmental Biology and Food Systems at UC Berkeley. I was born in Chittagong and immigrated to Long Beach at the age of seven! I joined Scleroderma United because I want to contribute to the mitigation of stigma and help develop culturally sensitive patient-centered approaches to scleroderma by increasing awareness of this often overlooked disease. I am also passionate about the intersection of the environment, human health, public policy, and clinical research. Additionally, I really enjoy cooking, reading, and cafe-hopping! :))

Hi everyone! My name is Harpriya Khela and I am a Canadian medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I am super excited to join Scleroderma United’s team as part of the Education Board to continue to spread knowledge on the disease from a patient’s perspective. Every patient has a different story! Outside of volunteering, I have strong Oncology research passions, specifically in Multiple Myeloma. With regards to hobbies, I play on the university’s basketball team and train with the Kickboxing Team! I also enjoy running and picking up new skills such as a third language or baking (although I am not very good).

Growing up in Pennsylvania in a hub of hospitals and pharma/biotech companies, I discovered my interest in healthcare early on. During my undergrad years at Columbia, I explored the many different clinical and corporate fields in the healthcare industry, which led me to my current job as a biotech communications strategist. I then decided to join the Scleroderma United team as a volunteer because I missed working with and advocating for patients. I hope to use the communications skills and healthcare experience I have gained to promote Scleroderma United’s mission to educate and provide community for people struggling with Scleroderma.

My name is Basim. I am an A-level student, on course to completing my final year of high school at SES, UAE. I particularly enjoy playing team sports, having recently constructed my own cricket club with the motto ‘The strength of the team is each member.’ As someone who is passionate about research in disease and immunity, I was immediately drawn to the team’s mission to both: raise awareness about this rare disease and help patients understand that they are not alone. Additionally, the team’s focus on collaboration and inclusivity resonated with me, and I believe that working with like-minded individuals towards a common goal is key to achieving a lasting impact. Ultimately, I am excited about the opportunity to work with such a talented and dedicated group of individuals and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our Scleroderma warriors.

My name is Chelsea, and I’m currently a student from California researching under the American College of Cardiology and a Harvard lab. After my aunt passed away from the autoimmune disease and learning from the voices of other patients, I wanted to contribute to Scleroderma United’s Education Board, hoping to provide accessible resources for underrepresented communities and educate more students on the discussion revolving scleroderma. Outside of volunteering, she enjoys writing, reading, and spending time drawing. Chelsea worked under some advocacy initiatives before (ie. Dear Asian Youth, Zero Hour, Fridays for the Future) and wants to continue helping other youths find their voice.

Hidden gem of Asia, Malaysia is where I come from. As a 15-year-old exchange student currently a junior at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Kolej GENIUS Insan, I feel that there are still a lot of cures to be discovered for skin related diseases especially scleroderma and eczema. I am passionate about programming, volunteering, and giving back to the community.
